This seminar will concentrate on the analysis of gender equality across all fields in STEM. Starting by exploring how and if issues of gender equality play a role in our own domains of study and research we will address the question of why we still face today the underrepresentation of girls and women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics related areas. Thoroughly, we will go through selected publications from sociology, history, gender studies and technological sciences to understand the reasons and challenges of not only gender equality but also from inequalities concerning diversity as a whole. For instance, we will discuss the 'intersection' of gender, race and cultural boundaries in computer science. Finally, we will also address questions on the implications for (university related) policies aiming to increase women's STEM participation.
